The light-house
Our little cottage is nestled just across from the light-house. Whenever I turn down our street, in twilight or later, the light-house beckons me home. The sensations of warmth, gratitude, and joy that fill me happen every time.
To clarify, this is not a lighthouse guiding ships, but rather a two-story bungalow with every light in the house illuminated. From the basement windows straight up through the second floor, the home glows with the very warmth we’re all aching for.
Before I knew the inhabitants personally, I would have staredowns with the old man in a wife-beater who stood at the second-story window and watched me walk my dog late at night. In the moments when I felt extra bitchy I’d wave at him, as if to say I see you, sicko! He would always stand and stare in the same position, unmoving, and it unerved me.
Now I am lucky enough to know the inhabitants personally, and the ribbed tank top-clad old man no longer watches me. That’s mostly though, because no man has lived in that house–at least not in the nearly eight years we’ve called this home.
The light-house is one of matriarchal magic. I love it as much as I adore its residents. It was, in fact, a divine feminine love of fashion that had placed a mannequin at the second-floor window, for a time, its back to me as I waved like a lunatic. My imagination filled in the gender and attire because, of course, it did…
The lights live brightly, every single night, not realizing how partial to their routine we’ve become, first as strangers and now as friends… Isn’t this the way it is, though? The light and magic of our own, which comes from us, is seen well beyond those in our circles. Our own essence can attract or deter those we may never even know, reaching far beyond our ability to understand. This can happen with our attitude, our art, the work we do, or the impact we have in areas of this world.
One thing will always be true: the darkness of this world will never fully go away.
May we become the recognizers of guiding lights, allowing our own light to scatter out to those who need it too.

This was a sweet fun read. A good reminder that we don’t know what we don’t know. Judgments have a price. How lovely you are friends with the inhabitants now!
Now that was some good writing right there!!!!! Thank you for sharing!
